Cemetery Sexton/Building & Grounds Maintenance

**Position Summary** Fruitport Charter Township is seeking a highly self\-motivated, dependable, and detail\-oriented Cemetery Sexton/Building \& Grounds Maintenance Worker to conduct cemetery operations and perform comprehensive property and facilities maintenance throughout Township\-owned properties. This position ensures that cemetery services are conducted with professionalism and compassion and maintains Township buildings, grounds, and equipment. **Essential Duties and Responsibilities** **Cemetery Operations \& Records** * Locate (including layout, staking, and verification of plot locations) and prepare gravesites for burials and monument foundations. * Oversee coordination with vault companies/funeral homes and perform grave openings and closings in accordance with Township procedures and safety standards. * Maintain accurate cemetery records, burial logs, and plot maps. * Provide compassionate customer service and build positive relationships with families and community members. * Respond to public inquiries regarding burial locations, cemetery regulations, etc. * Enforce cemetery rules and regulations in a respectful and consistent manner. **Grounds \& Landscaping Maintenance** * Perform mowing, weed whipping, watering, edging, trimming, fertilizing, etc. * Conduct tree trimming and pruning. * Perform landscaping of sign areas and other designated Township areas. * Remove leaves and seasonal debris. * Provide care and maintenance of Township bike paths. * Maintain cemetery and Township irrigation/sprinkler systems, including seasonal startup, winterization, troubleshooting, and repairs. * Perform snow plowing and shoveling of cemetery property, Township parking lots, sidewalks, bike paths, and other designated areas. **Property \& Building Maintenance** * Perform routine building maintenance including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repairs. * Conduct street sign installation and maintenance. **Equipment \& Vehicle Maintenance** * Operate and maintain equipment such as mowers, tractors, plows, trimmers, chainsaws, and hand tools; cleaning, sharpening blades, fluid checks, and minor repairs. * Keeping Township vehicle clean, orderly, and conducting minor repairs/maintenance needs. **Operational Support** * Assist with supply purchasing and inventory management for cemetery and building \& grounds operations. * Assist with general Township maintenance projects and special assignments as directed. * Work independently with minimal supervision while demonstrating initiative and sound judgment. * Maintain clean and orderly work areas, storage facilities, and equipment. **Qualifications** **Education \& Experience** * High school diploma or GED required. * Experience in cemetery operations, landscaping, groundskeeping, building maintenance, and/or public works preferred. * Experience operating equipment and power tools preferred. * Experience in customer service preferred. **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities** * Knowledge of cemetery operations and burial procedures (or ability to learn). * Working knowledge of landscaping, irrigation systems, building maintenance, and mechanical repair. * Ability to operate and maintain light and heavy equipment safely. * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. * Self\-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. * Ability to interact compassionately and professionally with the public. * Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, business associates, and community members. **Physical Requirements** * Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in varying weather conditions; ability to work outdoors year\-round in heat, cold, rain, and snow. * Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds. * Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and operating machinery. **Licenses and Certifications** * Valid Michigan Driver’s License required. **Work Hours** * Full\-time, 8\-hour shifts * Occasional overtime, including evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required based on burial schedules, weather events, or seasonal demands. **Compensation \& Benefits** Compensation and benefits are determined in accordance with the SEIU collective bargaining agreement.
