Job Description

**Description** --------------- The Cemeteries Supervisor oversees the daily operations, maintenance, and customer service functions for two municipal cemeteries. This position leads staff, manages interment activities, ensures high\-quality grounds maintenance, and supports families and funeral partners with professionalism and compassion. The role also ensures compliance with municipal policies, regulatory standards, and safety requirements. **Examples of Duties** ---------------------- **Operations \& Maintenance** * Oversee all grounds maintenance, including mowing, landscaping, tree care, irrigation, and beautification projects. * Direct grave opening and closing, lot preparation, marker installations, and interment logistics. * Manage customer monument orders and coordinate with monument companies to ensure compliance and accurate installation. * Process plot sales, deeds, transfers, and related documents. * Ensure proper scheduling, operation, and maintenance of heavy equipment (e.g., backhoes, tractors, mowers, trucks). * Conduct routine inspections to ensure safety, cleanliness, and maintenance standards are met. * Manage work orders and track progress to timely completion. **Leadership \& Supervision** * Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate maintenance staff, equipment operators, seasonal workers, and administrative personnel. * Provide coaching and development opportunities to support high\-performing teams. * Conduct weekly safety toolbox talks with cemetery staff to reinforce safe work practices and address current operational hazards. * Coordinate and schedule training on the proper use, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and machinery to ensure compliance with safety standards. * Maintain complete and accurate safety training documentation, including attendance records, training logs, certifications, and follow\-up actions, ensuring all records meet departmental and regulatory requirements. * Assign daily work tasks and ensure appropriate staffing levels for operational needs. * Enforce safety policies and ensure compliance with OSHA and municipal safety regulations. **Customer Service \& Records Management** * Serve as the primary point of contact for families, funeral homes, and vendors. * Provide sensitive, compassionate assistance regarding burials, plot sales, cemetery policies, and genealogy inquiries. * Maintain accurate burial records, maps, sales documents, and operational logs. * Coordinate interment schedules and details with funeral directors and families. * Respond to public inquiries, community concerns, and information requests. **Administrative \& Budget Responsibilities** * Assist with budget development, equipment procurement, and long\-term resource planning. * Monitor inventory and coordinate purchasing of tools, materials, and supplies. * Maintain compliance documentation, including permits, maintenance records, and safety reports. * Support planning for cemetery expansion, infrastructure improvements, and sustainability initiatives. * Manage reporting and deposits for accounts receivable related to plot sales, monument orders, and cemetery services. **Typical Qualifications** -------------------------- **Education \& Experience** * 3–5 years of experience in cemetery operations or related fields requiring coordination with funeral homes and the public. * 2\+ years of supervisory or crew leadership experience in maintenance, landscaping, or similar operational environments. * High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in business, landscape management, public administration, or a related field preferred. **Supplemental Information** ---------------------------- **Knowledge, Skills \& Abilities** * Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to assist grieving families professionally and compassionately. * Proven ability to lead staff, manage priorities, and solve operational challenges. * Knowledge of workplace safety standards and OSHA guidelines. * Proficiency with basic computer applications; cemetery management software preferred. * Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and safe operation of heavy equipment. * Ability to read and interpret cemetery maps and plot diagrams, and maintain accurate ***EMPLOYEE BENEFITS*** * 401a Contribution (employee match not required) * Bus Pass Program * Education Assistance * Employee Assistance Program * Employee Suggestion Program * Family and Medical Leave * Flexible Spending Accounts * Group Health Insurance * Group Dental Insurance * Jury Duty Leave * Life/Accidental Death Insurance * Long\-Term Care Insurance * Military Leave * Paid Holidays * Promotion from Within * Retirement/Pension Plan (State of NC) * School Leave * Shared Leave * Short\-Term Disability Insurance * Sick Leave * Training * Vacation Leave * Wellness Program The City of Winston\-Salem's employment practices are guided by federal, state, and local rules and regulations guaranteeing employment opportunities to all persons without regard to and prohibiting discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy, age, religion, political affiliation or beliefs, national origin or handicap, unless a bonafide occupational qualification exists.
