Child Life Specialist (CCLS) - Inpatient Pediatrics

**Role Overview**
The Child Life Specialist supports pediatric patients and families by providing education, preparation, procedural support, and therapeutic play to reduce stress and facilitate coping during medical experiences. They act as a resource for staff, helping them understand the psychosocial effects of hospitalization on children and adolescents, considering their developmental and cultural backgrounds. The specialist assists families through grief and bereavement processes and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to assess and address psychosocial needs.


**Qualifications & Skills**
Candidates must have completed the 10 required courses outlined by the Association of Child Life Professionals and a 600-hour internship. A Bachelor's Degree in Child Development or a related field is required, along with certification as a Child Life Specialist within one year and Basic Life Support certification within 30 days. Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, initiative, and the ability to relate well to diverse populations are essential.


**Key Responsibilities**

* Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop coping strategies for patients and families.
* Use developmentally appropriate explanations, therapeutic play, and distraction techniques during procedures.
* Support family involvement and assist in adjustment to illness, injury, or loss.
* Document services, develop educational resources, and participate in staff training.
* Oversee inventory, facilitate pediatric programs, and supervise volunteers.
* Report suspicions of child abuse and perform related duties as assigned.
