Full-Time Transfer Care Specialist

Minnesota Cremation Services · Rockford, MN · Posted 1 week ago
$38,000 – $38,000 / yearly

Job Description

**Full-Time Transfer Care Specialist**

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday | 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
Home-Based / Field Role / We service the Greater Twin Cities, St. Cloud & Surrounding Communities

**Who We Are**

Minnesota Cremation Services was built around a simple belief: families choosing cremation deserve compassionate care, clear communication, transparency, and genuine human connection.

We are a local, woman-owned and operated cremation provider, and the way we care for families matters deeply to us.

We care about how people are treated.

We care about how our team treats each other.

We take ownership. We communicate. We help. We solve problems. We do not walk past something that needs attention just because it technically belongs to someone else.

And we never forget that every person who comes into our care is someone’s loved one.

We are looking for someone who shares those values.

About the Role

We are hiring a Full-Time Transfer Care Specialist to help care for families from the first phone call through bringing their loved one safely into our care.

This is not simply a transportation role.

It is a combination of **family communication, phone support, transfer care, problem-solving, and being available when families need us.**

You may answer the phone when someone has just experienced a death.

You may speak with a hospice nurse, nursing facility, hospital, Medical Examiner’s office, or grieving family member.

You may then be the person who goes to that home or facility to bring their loved one into our care.

How you answer the phone matters.

How you speak to someone matters.

How you enter their home matters.

How you care for their loved one matters. Pasted text

Schedule

This is a consistent full-time salaried position:

* **Tuesday: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM**
* **Wednesday: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM**
* **Thursday: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM**
* **Saturday: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM**
* **Sunday: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM**

After training, this is primarily a **home-based / field position**.

During your scheduled hours, you will work from home unless you are responding to a transfer, coming into our Rockford facility, attending training or meetings, handling vehicle or equipment needs, or completing another work-related responsibility.

Because response time matters, you must live within a reasonable distance of our Rockford location and primary service area.

**What the Workday Looks Like**

There really is no typical day.

Some days may be extremely quiet.

There may be days when no transfers occur.

There may be other days when several families need us within a short period of time and you are moving throughout most of your shift.

One day could have no transfers.

Another could have ten.

That unpredictability is simply part of this work.

Even when you are at home and there are no transfers taking place, you are still working as part of our team.

You will help answer incoming phone calls, communicate with families and care partners, document information, coordinate with our funeral directors, and make sure families receive prompt, compassionate support.

When you are scheduled, we need you available, responsive, professional, and ready to help.

**Phone & Family Support**

A significant part of this position includes helping answer incoming calls for Minnesota Cremation Services.

You may be the first person someone speaks with after a death has occurred.

That requires someone who can communicate calmly, clearly, and compassionately.

Responsibilities include:

* Answering incoming calls during scheduled hours
* Speaking with families who have just experienced a death
* Speaking with hospice staff, nursing facilities, hospitals, Medical Examiner offices, and other care partners
* Gathering information accurately
* Helping families understand what happens next
* Reassuring families and helping them feel supported
* Documenting information in our systems
* Communicating with funeral directors and other team members
* Helping coordinate transfers
* Making sure urgent information gets to the right person
* Maintaining professionalism and confidentiality at all times

We are not looking for someone who sounds scripted.

We want someone who listens, understands what a family needs, and communicates like a real human being.

**Transfer Care Responsibilities**

When a transfer is needed, you will respond and help bring that individual safely and respectfully into our care.

Depending on the circumstances, you may work independently or alongside another Transfer Care Specialist, Funeral Director, or team member.

Responsibilities include:

* Responding to private residences, nursing homes, hospice locations, hospitals, Medical Examiner offices, and other facilities
* Safely and respectfully transferring deceased individuals into our care
* Completing one-person transfers when appropriate
* Working with another team member when two-person assistance is required
* Helping provide additional transfer capacity when multiple calls occur at the same time
* Meeting families with compassion, patience, professionalism, and respect
* Explaining what is happening when appropriate
* Maintaining accurate identification and chain of custody
* Completing required documentation accurately
* Communicating clearly with our funeral directors and care team
* Assessing unfamiliar environments and determining the safest and most respectful approach
* Navigating homes, facilities, stairs, elevators, hallways, tight spaces, and difficult entrances
* Working safely in snow, ice, rain, heat, and other Minnesota weather conditions
* Keeping transfer vehicles and equipment clean, stocked, organized, and ready
* Helping with facility, equipment, vehicle, or other care-related responsibilities as needed

**Training & Onboarding**

Your first couple of weeks will be in person at our Rockford location.

During that time, you will:

* Listen to calls and learn how we communicate with families
* Learn how we speak with hospices, hospitals, nursing facilities, Medical Examiner offices, and other care partners
* Learn our phone systems
* Learn our case management systems and documentation processes
* Learn our internal communication and transfer coordination process
* Shadow experienced members of our team
* Go on transfers with our team
* Learn our transfer equipment and proper techniques
* Learn identification and chain-of-custody procedures
* Learn expectations for one-person and two-person transfers
* Learn how we handle challenging environments and unexpected situations
* Spend time with our funeral directors and care team so you understand the full process

We do not expect someone to walk in on day one and already know everything.

We will train you, let you listen, let you observe, bring you into transfers with experienced team members, and make sure you understand our standards before expecting you to work more independently.

After training, the position transitions primarily to home-based and field-based work.

**What This Job Is Really About**

A family may only meet you once.

You may spend 20 minutes with them during one of the hardest moments of their life.

They may not remember your name.

But they remember whether you were patient.

They remember whether you explained what was happening.

They remember how you spoke to them on the phone.

They remember whether you treated their home respectfully.

And they remember how gently you cared for their mom, dad, spouse, child, sibling, or friend.

That is why this role matters so much to us.

We can teach someone how to use our equipment.

We can teach our procedures.

We can teach our software.

What is much harder to teach is kindness, judgment, ownership, dependability, and genuine care for other people.

Those are the things we are looking for.

**The Reality of the Work**

We believe in being transparent about this job.

You will regularly be around deceased individuals.

You may see people who have died under many different circumstances and physical conditions.

You will meet families who are crying, shocked, exhausted, confused, angry, or overwhelmed.

You may walk into situations where the safest solution is not immediately obvious.

You may be dealing with a difficult staircase, a small room, severe weather, challenging family dynamics, or a transfer that takes much longer than expected.

You may finish one call and immediately receive another.

You may also have a completely quiet afternoon at home.

You need to be comfortable with both.

We want someone who can enjoy the quiet periods, respond quickly when things change, think clearly when something is difficult, and never allow a busy day to make the next family feel rushed.

The Physical Side of the Job

This is physically demanding work.

We use professional transfer equipment and proper techniques whenever possible, but deceased individuals still need to be moved safely and respectfully from many different environments.

You must be physically capable of:

* Lifting and assisting with significant weight
* Pushing and pulling loaded transfer equipment
* Bending, kneeling, reaching, and standing as needed
* Maneuvering stretchers and transfer equipment
* Navigating narrow hallways and small rooms
* Working around furniture and other obstacles
* Navigating stairs and uneven surfaces
* Loading and unloading transfer vehicles
* Working outdoors in Minnesota weather
* Working effectively with another team member during two-person transfers

Not every home was designed with a transfer in mind.

Good judgment matters just as much as physical strength.

**Who We’re Looking For**

We can train the right person on our equipment, procedures, systems, and processes.

What is much harder to teach is character.

We are looking for someone who is:

**Compassionate** - You genuinely care about people.

**Dependable** - If you are scheduled, we know we can count on you.

**Calm under pressure** - Difficult situations do not cause you to panic.

**Adaptable** - You understand that plans can change quickly.

**A strong communicator** - You can speak clearly and compassionately with families and professionals.

**A problem solver** - You can assess a situation and determine what needs to happen next.

**Professional** - You understand that every interaction represents Minnesota Cremation Services.

**Respectful** - Every deceased individual in our care is someone’s loved one.

**Detail-oriented** - Identification and documentation have to be correct every time.

**Independent** - You are comfortable working from home and managing your responsibilities without constant supervision.

**Team-oriented** - When another person needs help, you step in.

**Physically capable** - You understand and can safely perform the physical requirements of transfer care.

**Comfortable around death** - You can remain composed and respectful around deceased individuals.

**A safe driver** - You understand that safe driving is an important part of this position.

**Comfortable with technology** - You can use phones, computers, navigation systems, and learn new software.

Previous experience in funeral service, hospice, healthcare, EMS, caregiving, law enforcement, fire service, patient transportation, customer service, or another people-focused role can be helpful, but it is not required.

We would rather hire the right person and train them than hire someone with the perfect resume who does not fit our culture.

**Our Culture**

We believe strongly in **kindness, accountability, professionalism, flexibility, and ownership**.

We help each other.

We communicate.

We take responsibility for our work.

If something needs attention, we do not waste time figuring out whose problem it is.

We figure out how to help.

We want people who care about doing good work, who treat coworkers with respect, who are comfortable receiving feedback, and who take pride in the experience we provide families.

We are proud to be a woman-owned and operated Minnesota business, and we are intentional about creating a workplace where people feel trusted, supported, and responsible for the work they do.

We expect a lot from our team because families trust us with a lot.

We also believe good people deserve to be treated like good people.

**Why This Work Matters**

This work is not for everyone.

You have the opportunity to make an extraordinarily difficult moment a little easier for another human being.

You get to work independently while still being part of a close team.

You get to have real responsibility.

And you get to be part of a company that believes simple cremation care should still feel personal, compassionate, professional, and deeply respectful.
