Funeral Director
Job Description
Funeral Director & Family Care Manager
Auburn, Washington | Full Time | On-Site | Some Evening & Weekend Availability
Pay Range: $25 -$32/hr. depending upon experience + benefits.
Return Home is a highly unique death care company that uses a proprietary process called terramation to gently transform our bodies into soil when we die, ensuring our last act on the planet is one that gives back. We work with families and funeral professionals across the country with an approach that is transparent, compassionate, and deeply human.
We’re growing, and looking for an experienced funeral professional to join our team.
This isn’t a traditional funeral director role. You’ll be a central part of how we care for families, managing cases from first contact through the return of their loved one’s terramated remains.
The job is fast-paced, hands-on, and sometimes unpredictable. You’ll manage families, paperwork, services, funeral home partners, and plenty of unexpected situations along the way. You need to be organized, compassionate, comfortable making decisions, and able to figure out what needs your attention first.
What You’ll Do
* Answer calls, emails, live chat, and inquiries from families and funeral home partners
* Conduct at-need arrangements and guide families through paperwork, decisions, and next steps
* Coordinate transportation, decedent care, terramation, Lay-Ins, witnessings, and the return of terramated remains
* Manage active cases, documentation, authorizations, death certificates, payments, and case notes
* Keep families informed throughout the terramation process
* Schedule and facilitate appointments, services, tours, and visits
* Work closely with funeral homes and other deathcare professionals across the country
* Welcome families and visitors and help maintain a warm, organized, family-ready space
* Coordinate closely with our operations team and troubleshoot issues as they arise
* Occasionally represent Return Home at tours, events, conferences, or educational opportunities
* Any other singular thing we might need help with during our day-to-day operations; you’re a member of a team and we all wear many hats.
Above all, you’ll own your cases and make sure families feel cared for and nothing gets lost along the way.
Who We’re Looking For
You may be a great fit if you:
* Are a licensed funeral director and embalmer with several years of funeral service experience
* Are exceptionally organized and detail-oriented
* Communicate warmly and confidently with families
* Follow through without needing reminders
* Can manage multiple cases and priorities at once
* Are comfortable making decisions and solving problems independently
* Can shift easily between family care, administrative work, and whatever the day throws at you
* Are comfortable with technology and learning new systems
* Want responsibility and ownership rather than a narrowly defined task list
* Are excited about doing funeral service differently
The Reality of the Role
No two days at Return Home are exactly the same. Phones ring, plans change, families need things, and unexpected situations come up.
If you need a predictable day or prefer responsibilities that begin and end with arrangements and services, this probably won’t be the right fit.
But if you’re the kind of person who can walk into a complicated day, figure out what needs to happen, and take care of people with care and love, we’d love to meet you.
