**Funeral Home Removal Technician**
**Position Overview**
A Funeral Home Removal Technician plays a vital role in the funeral care process by responding to death calls and safely transporting decedents from homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, and accident scenes to the funeral home or designated care center. This position requires professionalism, compassion, physical strength, and the ability to interact respectfully with grieving families, medical staff, and first responders.
This role is essential to maintaining the dignity of the deceased and upholding the funeral home’s reputation for exceptional care.
**Key Responsibilities**
**Decedent Removal \& Transportation**
* Respond promptly to first\-call notifications from hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, medical examiners, and private residences.
* Safely and respectfully transfer decedents using stretchers, cots, body bags, and other equipment.
* Transport decedents to the funeral home, crematory, or other designated facility following established protocols.
* Maintain dignity, privacy, and respect for the deceased at all times.
**Family \& Public Interaction**
* Communicate with families in a calm, compassionate, and professional manner during emotionally difficult moments.
* Provide clear explanations of the removal process when appropriate.
* Coordinate with medical staff, law enforcement, and other professionals at the scene.
* Park cars and greet the client family and general public at funeral services.
**Documentation \& Compliance**
* Accurately complete all required paperwork, including chain\-of\-custody forms, identification tags, and transport logs.
* Follow all OSHA, state, and federal regulations regarding handling of human remains.
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
**Vehicle \& Equipment Maintenance**
* Inspect and clean removal vehicles daily to ensure safety, sanitation, and readiness.
* Maintain stretchers, PPE, and other equipment in proper working condition.
* Restock supplies such as gloves, sheets, disinfectants, and protective gear.
**Facility Support**
* Assist with transferring decedents within the funeral home or care center.
* Support preparation room staff as needed (non\-embalming tasks only unless licensed).
* Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
* Wash facility vehicles and maintain vehicle maintenance schedule.
* Other duties as specified by the Funeral Director or Management Team
**Qualifications**
**Required**
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
* Ability to lift, push, and pull 100–200 lbs and greater with assistance.
* Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as part of an on\-call rotation.
* Professional appearance and demeanor.
* Strong emotional resilience and ability to remain composed in stressful situations.
**Preferred**
* Experience in funeral service, EMS, security, or healthcare.
* Knowledge of proper body handling techniques.
* CPR or first\-aid certification.
* Customer service or crisis\-response experience.
**Skills \& Competencies**
* Compassion \& empathy when interacting with grieving families.
* Discretion \& confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
* Physical stamina for lifting, carrying, and long shifts.
* Attention to detail in documentation and identification procedures.
* Professional communication with families, coworkers, and medical personnel.
* Teamwork—ability to work with a partner during removals.
**Work Environment**
* Frequent travel in removal vehicles.
* Exposure to varying environments: private homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, outdoor scenes.
* Regular handling of deceased individuals, including those who passed from natural causes, trauma, or infectious disease (with proper PPE).
* On\-call responsibilities requiring rapid response.
It is the expectation of staff on funeral days to be in professional dress attire.
Job Type: Part\-time
Pay: From $15\.00 per hour
