Grief Counselor
Job Description
**Virtual · Flexible hours · $80 per 45-minute session**
**About OneVillage**
Healthcare is broken. Not because people don't care, but because navigating it alone is nearly impossible. At OneVillage, we're fixing that.
OneVillage is a whole-health employee benefits platform that connects employees with expert navigators, clinicians and specialists across insurance navigation, medical navigation, mental health, nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, chronic condition care, financial wellness, and more. We're not a chatbot. We're not a directory. We're real humans, deeply trained and deeply empathetic, who show up for employees at the moments that matter most.
Think about what it means to have a brilliant friend who happens to know everything about healthcare, benefits, and wellness, someone who picks up the phone, figures it out with you, and doesn't let go until the problem is solved. That's OneVillage.
Our members feel it. The reviews and testimonials we receive daily are humbling: employees telling us we saved their marriage, their finances, their sanity, their lives. We've coordinated emergency medevacs. We've helped members navigate cancer diagnoses, mental health crises, and impossible insurance battles. We've been there for the moments that no one else shows up for.
And we're just getting started.
**The Role**
We're hiring a Grief Counselor who has sat with people through death, dying and loss, $80 per 45-minute virtual session. We bring you the clients. You bring the steadiness.
The result for our clinicians: you get to spend your time actually counseling. We bring the clients, handle the insurance and employer-benefits side, schedule the sessions, pay you reliably, and surround you with 25+ other hand-selected clinicians and specialists you can collaborate with and refer to. No cold outreach. No marketing grind. No insurance-credentialing nightmare. Just the work you trained to do.
**Who we're looking for**
* A clinician whose work has centered on death and loss: hospice or palliative care, oncology, funeral service aftercare, bereavement programs, or a grief-focused practice.
* Fluent in every kind of loss our members bring: a parent, a partner, a child, a pregnancy, a friend, a diagnosis that changes the future, and the anticipatory grief that starts while a loved one is still here.
* Grounded, steady, and warm. You can hold silence, tears, and anger without rushing anyone toward "moving on."
* Someone who believes care works best in community. Many of our members are also working with other OneVillage clinicians and specialists (eldercare, financial, mental health, medical navigation) and the cross-referral loop makes outcomes compound.
**What you'll do**
* Deliver 1:1 virtual grief counseling sessions (45 min) to OneVillage members
* Support adults through recent and long-held losses, anticipatory grief, caregiver grief, sudden or traumatic loss, and grief that shows up at work
* Build practical coping plans members can actually use between sessions: rituals, routines, sleep, boundaries with family, returning to work
* Recognize when grief has become complicated, or when depression, trauma, or safety concerns need a higher level of care, and route members to it
* Collaborate across specialties: eldercare specialists on a parent's decline, financial specialists on the money side of a loss, medical navigators on what comes next
* Document session notes in our secure portal using HIPAA-compliant tools
* Participate (optionally) in monthly consult groups with the OneVillage clinical team
**What you bring**
* Active independent license in good standing: LCSW (or LICSW/LCSW-C), LPC/LCPC, LMFT, Psychologist (PhD/PsyD), or equivalent, and an individual NPI so your sessions can be billed to members' health plans (we handle the credentialing paperwork with you)
* Licensed in any state is fine, as long as you are willing to get licensed in DC, Maryland and Virginia (we support the process)
* 3+ years of post-licensure clinical experience with people facing death, dying, and bereavement
* Training in at least one evidence-based grief approach (prolonged grief disorder treatment, Worden's tasks of mourning, the dual process model, meaning reconstruction, or ACT/CBT adapted for grief)
* Comfort with virtual-first care via HIPAA-compliant video
* Reliable internet and a quiet, private, professional home-office setup
**Nice to have**
* Licensure in more than one state (a big plus, since our members are nationwide)
* A grief credential such as Certified Grief Counselor or Fellow in Thanatology (FT)
* Hospice, palliative care, or funeral-service aftercare experience
* Experience with pregnancy and infant loss, suicide loss, or sudden and traumatic loss
* Experience facilitating grief support groups
* Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or another second language
* Prior work inside an insurance-covered or employer-benefits care model
**What we offer**
* Clients come to you. Members find us through insurance, employer benefits, and our partner organizations. You never have to do lead-gen.
* We handle the plumbing. Credentialing, scheduling, HIPAA-compliant video, session notes, billing, and insurance eligibility checks are all handled by OneVillage.
* Flexible and virtual. Set your own availability. Add as many or as few client slots as you want. Work from anywhere with reliable internet.
* Real colleagues, not a platform. You'll be part of a tight-knit team of about 25 clinicians and specialists who meet, refer clients across specialties, and genuinely care about each other's practices.
* Mission-aligned pay. Session-based compensation with transparent rates. No volume quotas. No pressure to upsell anything.
**Compensation:** $80 per 45-minute session
**How to apply**
Interested? Apply on our site or email [email protected] with your CV, the state(s) where you hold an active license, and a short note on why this work matters to you. We review applications weekly and respond to every candidate. Full description: https://onevillage.io/c/careers-grief-counselor
