**Position/Title**: **Horticulture Laborer (Full Time)**
**Organization: Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum (www.bellefontainecemetery.org)**
Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum (BCA) is a 314\-acre historic, non\-profit cemetery. Founded in 1849 and considered one of the premier historic cemeteries in the United States, the cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is well known for its rich history and architecture and engages the public through tours, lectures, and events.
BCA is also a Level III arboretum with large specimen tree collections, added to annually. Dozens of annual, perennial, and native plant gardens are spread throughout the cemetery. With over 100 acres of undeveloped land, the cemetery has great potential for horticultural development. Under its Master Plan, the cemetery is committed to preserving and enhancing its landscape and recently constructed the first of several phases of new memorial gardens, installing over 16,000 plants and 68,000 bulbs. Landscape programs are supported by an endowment, as well as by cemetery sales, and gifts raised through the Friends of Bellefontaine.
This position is a hands\-on role focused on physical labor, garden upkeep, plant care, and supporting the horticulture team with seasonal and long\-term projects that help keep the grounds beautiful for families and visitors.
**Reports to**: Horticulture Supervisor, Project Manager, Director of Horticulture/Curator of Living Collections, General Manager, and President
**Work Location:** In person (on\-site)
**Remote Work:** Remote work is not available for this position. This is a labor role that requires on\-site, in\-person work to perform essential job duties.
**Should have skills relevant to the following responsibilities and tasks of a Horticulture Laborer position at BCA:**
· Identify common weeds and perform a variety of weeding techniques.
· Mulch trees, paths, and garden beds as assigned.
· Maintain existing garden beds, including weeding, watering, fertilizing, and seasonal planting.
· Assist with planting and establishing trees, shrubs, bulbs, annuals, and perennials (including transplanting).
· Support the installation, maintenance, and removal of annual and bulb displays.
· Safely apply herbicides and other controls as directed to manage weeds and invasive species.
· Prune shrubs and small ornamental trees under supervision.
· Conduct routine scouting for pests and diseases and report findings to supervisory staff.
· Assist with basic floral arrangement tasks for events and green burials.
· Support irrigation tasks, including scheduling, adjusting, and inspecting irrigation systems.
· Communicate effectively with horticulture staff and grounds crew regarding tasks, site needs, and priorities.
· Maintain tools and equipment; keep items clean, organized, and in good working order.
· Perform basic record keeping, including uploading photos and logging completed tasks.
· Participate in volunteer workdays, providing direction and hands\-on support as needed.
· Assist with horticulture\-related events, tours, classes, and cemetery programs.
· Assist with snow removal and ice management as needed to support safe access throughout the cemetery.
· Support general grounds operations as needed.
· Perform other duties as assigned.

**Minimum Requirements**
· Valid driver’s license.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum one (1\) year of experience in horticulture, landscaping, groundskeeping, or related work.
· Must be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, including regularly checking email and responding professionally and promptly.
· Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
· Ability to communicate professionally in person and in writing.
· Availability for occasional evenings, weekends, and overtime.
**Physical Demands \& Work Environment**
· Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. unassisted.
· Frequent walking, bending, standing, kneeling, reaching, and use of hand tools for extended periods.
· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather.
**Schedule**
· 8\-hour shifts
· Monday–Friday
· Occasional Saturdays and evenings for events
**Pre\-Employment Requirements**
Candidates must pass a pre\-employment physical (including lift test) and background check.
