Carewell Cremations and Natural Burial is a family-owned, women-owned funeral care provider serving families throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Funeral Director to support our preparation room and ensure every person entrusted to us receives dignified, respectful care.

This is a hands-on role primarily focused on preparation and back-of-house operations. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, stays organized in a busy environment, and communicates clearly with funeral directors, crematory operators, and transport staff.

Responsibilities

* Provide respectful care of the deceased, including bathing, dressing, cosmetics, positioning, and casketing.
* Prepare individuals for identification viewings, family viewings, funeral services, cremation, and natural burial.
* Perform embalming and restorative care when needed, if appropriately licensed.
* Verify identification, track personal belongings, and maintain accurate preparation and chain-of-custody records.
* Review preparation instructions, family requests, and required documentation before beginning work.
* Coordinate with funeral directors and crematory staff to meet service schedules and preparation deadlines.
* Assist with transfers, receiving individuals into our care, and movement within the facility.
* Maintain a clean, organized preparation room, including disinfecting equipment and monitoring supplies.
* Follow established procedures for infection control, personal protective equipment, and safe handling.
* Communicate concerns promptly and help resolve preparation or scheduling issues.
* Assist with viewings, witness cremations, and services as needed.

Qualifications

* An active Virginia funeral service license, or an appropriate funeral director license for the duties assigned.
* Experience with preparation room care, dressing, cosmetics, and casketing.
* Embalming and restorative care experience preferred.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to dignity, identification accuracy, and confidentiality.
* Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and collaborate with a busy team.
* Comfort using digital case management systems and maintaining clear records.
* Ability to safely assist with lifting and transferring the deceased using appropriate equipment and team support.
* Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
