Licensed Funeral Director -Friday–Monday | Four-Day Workweek
Job Description
**Licensed Funeral Director – Four-Day Workweek | Friday–Monday**
Minnesota Cremation Services is growing quickly, and we are looking for a Licensed Funeral Director who wants to be part of building something different in funeral care.
We are a local, woman-owned and woman-run funeral home and cremation provider built around a simple belief: ***families deserve better.***
Better communication. Better transparency. Better accessibility. Better technology. And above all, deeply compassionate care from people who genuinely care about the families we serve.
We are not trying to become another traditional funeral home.
We are building a modern cremation provider that combines the professionalism and standards of exceptional funeral service with a simpler, more responsive experience for families.
And we are looking for someone who wants to be part of that.
**The Role**
This is a unique Funeral Director position designed around weekend coverage and supporting our team when families need us outside of the traditional Monday through Friday schedule.
You will serve as the Funeral Director primarily responsible for our weekend families, including answering incoming calls during daytime weekend hours, guiding families through arrangements, performing transfers into our care, supporting active cases, and ensuring families always feel cared for and know what comes next.
Our goal is not simply to have someone “covering the weekend.”
We want someone who takes ownership of the families in their care and understands that even when our office is quieter, the experience for the family should be exactly the same: warm, responsive, professional, and compassionate.
**A Different Kind of Funeral Home**
Our team is small, close-knit and growing quickly. We work hard, communicate constantly and help each other.
There isn't a lot of “that's not my job” around here.
Our Funeral Directors aren't tucked away in an office only handling arrangements and paperwork. We answer phones. We meet families. We make transfers. We solve problems. We help each other when things get busy.
Leadership is involved in the day-to-day operation of the company, and good ideas don't have to travel through five layers of management before someone listens to them.
We care about doing things well, but we also care about continually asking whether there is a better way to do them.
We want people who take their responsibility to families incredibly seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
No ego. No drama. Just good people working together and taking really good care of families.
**The Schedule**
This is a full-time, salaried position working four days per week:
***Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.***
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are your regular days off every week.
Friday begins in the office with the team. You'll have time to catch up on cases, go through handoffs, complete paperwork, meet with families and know what's happening heading into the weekend.
From there, much of the position can be worked remotely between transfers, arrangements and other family needs.
Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., you will be the first point of contact for families calling Minnesota Cremation Services. You'll take first calls, answer questions, explain our services and pricing, and help families understand what happens next.
Overnight phone coverage is handled separately, so you are not expected to stay up answering incoming calls throughout the night. However, if a transfer comes in during your coverage, you will be contacted and will go out to complete the transfer with another team member.
Monday is another full workday, with much of the day able to be worked remotely while continuing to care for your families, complete arrangements, handle transfers and manage your cases.
**Transfers Are Part of the Role**
This is a hands-on Funeral Director position.
Transfers are not something another department handles for you. When a family needs us during your coverage, you will physically go out and help bring their loved one into our care.
We send two people on transfers when required, so you will have another team member with you.
We actually believe there is something valuable about this model.
You may be the person who first walks into a family's home during one of the hardest moments of their lives. Instead of handing that family off to someone they've never met, you may also be the Funeral Director who continues caring for them through arrangements and the cremation process.
Sometimes it may make sense to begin parts of the arrangement conversation while you're already with the family. Other times, they need space and you'll follow up later.
We trust our Funeral Directors to understand the difference.
What You'll Do
* Care for families from their first interaction with Minnesota Cremation Services through completion of arrangements
* Answer incoming calls and serve as the first point of contact during daytime weekend hours
* Perform transfers and bring loved ones into our care
* Meet families with compassion and professionalism in their homes, facilities and other places of death
* Explain our cremation services, pricing and process clearly and honestly
* Complete arrangements in person, by phone or remotely
* Complete cremation authorizations, permits and required documentation
* Coordinate private viewings and other family requests
* Communicate proactively with families so they are never left wondering what happens next
* Manage your cases and follow through on the details
* Maintain accurate and timely case documentation
* Communicate with the rest of the team and make smooth handoffs when needed
* Jump in and help when something needs to get done
If one of your families needs an in-person appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, we can be flexible. You can make a smooth handoff to another Funeral Director, or if you would rather continue working with that family yourself, you can.
**Who We're Looking For**
Of course, we need someone who knows how to be a Funeral Director.
But we care just as much about how you treat people.
We're looking for someone who is kind, dependable, down-to-earth and comfortable talking with families during incredibly difficult moments.
Someone who communicates well, follows through and doesn't need to be micromanaged.
You should be comfortable taking the very first call from someone who may have no idea what they're supposed to do next, explaining their options without pressure, and making them feel like they've reached the right people.
You also need to be comfortable with the physical side of funeral service. You'll be performing transfers as a regular part of this position, not occasionally helping with them.
***Most importantly, we're looking for someone who genuinely cares.***
What You'll Need
* Minnesota Funeral Director license or eligibility for Minnesota licensure
* Strong communication and people skills
* Ability to work independently and stay organized
* Comfort taking first calls and discussing services and pricing with families
* Ability and willingness to physically perform transfers
* Dependability and responsiveness during scheduled coverage
* Comfort working a consistent Friday through Monday schedule
* Valid driver's license
* Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position
* Comfort using technology and working remotely
**Why This Role Works**
Funeral service doesn't always fit neatly into a Monday-through-Friday schedule. Instead of pretending it does, we've built this position around the times families actually need us.
In return, you get something that's still uncommon in funeral service: a consistent four-day workweek.
You'll know your schedule. You'll have Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday off every week. You won't spend every weekend sitting inside a funeral home waiting for the phone to ring. Between calls, transfers, arrangements and family needs, much of your work can be done remotely.
You'll have independence, but you'll still be part of a team that has your back.
And you'll have the opportunity to help us continue building a funeral home that we believe can be better for both families and the people who work here.
If you're a Funeral Director who takes your work seriously without taking yourself too seriously, cares deeply about families, likes being part of a growing team and wants to help us build something different, we'd love to meet you.
Minnesota Cremation Services has been intentionally built differently.
Our Funeral Directors are surrounded by a team so they can spend more of their time on the work that actually requires their license, judgment, experience, and ability to care for families.
**Our Transfer Care Team**
We have dedicated Transfer Care Specialists who handle calls and transfers overnight.
During the overnight hours, the Transfer Care Specialist is the first point of contact for incoming calls.
If a transfer requires an additional team member, you may be contacted to assist with the physical transfer alongside the Transfer Care Specialist.
You are not being sent out alone to handle overnight transfers.
**Our Care Coordinator Team**
Our Care Coordinators assist with paperwork, communication, case management, and many of the administrative details that can consume a Funeral Director's day.
You have a team around you.
**Our Own Private Crematory**
Cremation takes place at our modern facility in Rockford. The people entrusted to us remain in our care rather than being transported to a third-party crematory.
That matters to us, and it matters to many of the families we serve.
**What You Will Do**
As a Licensed Funeral Director with Minnesota Cremation Services, you will help make sure families receive exceptional care no matter what day of the week they need us.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Answering incoming calls and serving as the primary Funeral Director contact during assigned weekend daytime hours
* Guiding families through at-need cremation arrangements with compassion, patience, and confidence
* Helping families understand their options clearly and without pressure or unnecessary upselling
* Completing and overseeing Funeral Director responsibilities required under Minnesota law
* Reviewing cases to ensure documentation, authorizations, identification, and information are accurate and complete
* Coordinating with our Care Coordinators, Transfer Care Team, crematory team, healthcare facilities, hospices, medical examiners, and other partners
* Communicating proactively with families so they are never left wondering what is happening or what comes next
* Supporting private family viewings and other personalized needs when scheduled
* Assisting with pre-planning conversations when appropriate
* Helping with transfers when additional assistance is needed during assigned on-call periods
* Maintaining exceptional standards for identification, chain of custody, documentation, dignity, and care
* Identifying problems and helping solve them rather than simply passing them along
* Stepping in where needed when circumstances require it
* Treating every person entrusted to us as though they were a member of our own family
**How We Work**
There is an entrepreneurial energy at Minnesota Cremation Services.
Things move quickly.
We are constantly improving.
If there is a better way to serve a family, communicate with someone, organize a process, or support our team, we want to find it.
That means we are looking for people who notice things.
People who ask, “How can we make this better?”
People who take ownership rather than waiting for someone else to solve a problem.
And people who understand that titles and job descriptions matter less than making sure the family in front of us is taken care of.
There will be times when everyone jumps in.
That is part of our culture.
Not because we are disorganized, but because we believe great teams take care of one another and do what needs to be done.
**Our Culture**
We have high expectations for ourselves and for one another.
But this is not a culture built around ego, hierarchy, or doing something a certain way simply because that is how funeral homes have always done it.
We value drive.
We value kindness.
We value people who follow through.
We value people who communicate.
We value people who take responsibility when something belongs to them.
And we value people who are willing to help when someone else needs them.
We care about work-life balance and taking care of our people. We also recognize there are moments in this profession when a family needs us, a problem needs to be solved, or a teammate needs help.
We want people who understand the difference.
**What You Get in Return**
We expect a lot from the people who help us care for families and build this company.
We believe they should receive a lot in return.
Minnesota Cremation Services offers:
* Competitive compensation based on experience and the structure of the position
* A strong support team around you
* Dedicated Transfer Care Specialists
* Care Coordinators who assist with case management and administrative work
* Modern systems and technology
* A modern, purpose-built facility
* Our own private onsite crematory
* A growing organization with opportunities for increased responsibility
* Leadership that listens to ideas and is willing to make changes
* A workplace where strong performance and ownership are recognized
* The opportunity to help shape how funeral care is delivered rather than simply inheriting the way it has always been done
**Help Us Build What Comes Next**
Funeral service is an old profession, and many parts of it have remained unchanged simply because that is how things have always been done.
We do not believe that is a good enough reason.
Families today expect responsiveness, transparency, straightforward pricing, better technology, and easier processes.
They also deserve something technology can never replace: a compassionate human being who understands what they are going through and genuinely cares about what happens next.
That is what we are building.
If you are a Licensed Funeral Director who takes ownership, cares deeply about families, enjoys being part of a team, and is excited about helping build a different kind of funeral care company in Minnesota, we would love to meet you.
Pay: From $55,000.00 per year
