Job Description
**About the Role**
We are seeking a compassionate and professional Transfer Care Specialist to join our funeral home team. As a registered Transfer Care Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Health, you will serve as the first point of contact for families during their most difficult moments. Under the direct supervision of a licensed mortician, you will be responsible for the dignified and respectful removal and transportation of deceased individuals from various locations to our funeral establishment.
**Key Responsibilities:**
**Transfer and Transportation**
* Respond to calls for removal of deceased individuals from hospitals, nursing homes, private residences, hospice facilities, and coroner/medical examiner offices
* Transport deceased individuals with dignity and respect using appropriate vehicles and equipment
* Ensure proper wrapping, covering, and positioning of the deceased on regulation ambulance cots, stretchers, or rigid trays according to Minnesota state requirements
* Operate transfer vehicles in compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations
* Maintain vehicles in clean, well\-stocked condition with all necessary equipment (cots, stretchers, body pouches, PPE, etc.)
**Documentation and Compliance**
* Complete and maintain accurate Certificates of Removal for every transfer in accordance with Minnesota Statutes Section 149A.90
* Verify and accurately confirm the identity of the deceased at all stages of handling
* Comply with all state and federal regulations regarding the transfer and transportation of human remains
* Follow all universal precaution requirements when handling deceased individuals
**Family Interaction and Professionalism**
* Serve as a compassionate representative of the funeral home during initial contact with grieving families
* Communicate with families, medical staff, and facility personnel with empathy, respect, and professionalism
* Answer questions and direct families to appropriate resources as needed
* Maintain composure and professionalism in challenging and emotionally difficult situations
**Safety and Health Protocols**
* Strictly adhere to universal precautions and infection control protocols to minimize risk of communicable disease transmission
* Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times when handling deceased individuals
* Follow proper lifting techniques and safety procedures to prevent injury
* Maintain awareness of health and safety concerns for both the public and transfer personnel
**Facility Maintenance**
* Assist with maintaining the funeral home's holding facility in secure, clean, and dignified condition
* Ensure proper storage of deceased individuals while awaiting final disposition
* Support general facility maintenance and housekeeping as needed
* Maintain all transfer equipment in good working order
**Required Qualifications**
* Must be registered as a Transfer Care Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Health **OR**
* Completion of the required 7\-hour training program
* Valid Minnesota driver's license with clean driving record
* Minimum age of 18 years (21\+ preferred)
* Ability to safely lift and move 100\+ pounds with assistance
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with grieving families
* Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols
* Availability for on\-call hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
* Ability to work independently and make sound judgments under pressure
* Professional appearance and demeanor at all times
**Preferred Qualifications**
* Previous experience in funeral service, healthcare, or emergency medical services
* Background in mortuary science or related field
* Familiarity with funeral home operations and procedures
* Experience working with grieving families or in sensitive situations
* Knowledge of medical terminology
* Current CPR/First Aid certification
**Physical Demands and Work Environment**
* Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver 100\+ pounds regularly (with assistance when needed)
* Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
* Ability to navigate stairs and work in various environmental conditions
* Exposure to deceased individuals and potentially infectious materials
* Work in morgues, hospitals, nursing homes, private residences, and outdoor locations
* On\-call availability required, including overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts
* Must be emotionally resilient and able to maintain composure in difficult situations
**What We Offer**
* Competitive compensation per transfer: 1–3 hours of removal: $100\.00, 3–4 hours of removal: $150\.00, 4\+ hours of removal: $200\.00

* Continuing education support **\-** We cover the required 3 hours of annual continuing education for Transfer Care Specialist registration renewal
