Maintenance Worker-Cemetery & Airport

The Department of Parks \& Recreation seeks to fill one (1\) position in the Maintenance Worker classification (Pay Range 16\) in the Cemetery \& Airport Division. This permanent, overtime\-eligible, bargaining unit position has a starting hourly pay rate of $24\.84\. The pay range for this position is $24\.84 (Step A) to $31\.79 (Step K). General Description of the Position Maintains Linwood and East Linwood Cemeteries as well as the Galesburg Municipal Airport. Duties include but are not limited to; mowing, trimming, general maintenance, equipment maintenance, weed spraying, snow plowing and supervising part time workers in various assignments \& duties. **Essential Functions** ----------------------- * Performs a variety of semi\-skilled tasks as related to the Cemetery and Airport. * Maintains and landscapes City property. * Performs snow removal operations. * Maintains records of work activities and supplies/equipment purchases. * Perform carpentry, masonry and related repair of municipal structures. * Prepares for special events. * Responsible for inventory and minor repairs of equipment. * Performs other duties as required or assigned. **Education** ------------- * High school diploma or equivalent is required. ### **Work Experience Required** * Two to three years of experience in construction, park maintenance or related grounds maintenance experience is desirable. * Extensive knowledge of safety procedures is necessary to ensure the safety of employees, equipment, and the public while performing duties in the care, operation and maintenance of the assigned job area. * Extensive knowledge of principles, practices, and tools used for the operation of park and landscaping maintenance. * Working knowledge of Illinois traffic laws and experience in safe operation of trucks and motor equipment. * The ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL license with Air Brakes endorsement within 6 months of hire. * The ability to obtain and maintain an Illinois Pesticide Commercial Not\-for\-Hire Operators spray license within 12 months of hire. ### **Personal Qualifications And Ability** * Ability to act as a lead supervisor in a temporary capacity. * Ability to carry out assignments with little supervision. * To communicate effectively through strong verbal and written skills and establish and maintain working relations with co\-workers and the public. * Ability to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. * Ability to understand and follow directions. * Ability to respond correctly and effectively to public inquiries and to inform and comfort individuals who are under stress. * To be on a 24\-hour call in case of responding to municipal emergencies. * To be knowledgeable \& compliant of the City’s safety procedures and practices.
