Part-Time Accountant

**Conroy-Tully Walker Cremations, Funerals & Gatherings – Portland, Maine**

Walker is a local, family-owned funeral home serving families throughout Greater Portland and Southern Maine. We are seeking an experienced **Part-Time Accountant** to become a trusted member of our team.

The work we do is personal. Families invite us into their lives during some of their most difficult days, and we take that responsibility seriously. While this position primarily works behind the scenes, we believe every member of our team contributes to the care we are able to provide families.

**The Position**

You’ll work closely with ownership and our Director of Operations to oversee important aspects of the accounting and financial reporting for several related business entities.

Responsibilities will include:

* General ledger accounting and account reconciliations
* Accounts payable and accounts receivable oversight
* Preparing and reviewing monthly financial statements
* Maintaining and improving our Chart of Accounts
* Coordinating sales tax reporting and timely payments
* Tracking revenue and maintaining internal financial spreadsheets and reports
* Monitoring cash flow and helping us understand financial trends
* Tracking and reconciling intercompany transactions and loans between related entities
* Maintaining accurate loan and amortization schedules, including principal and interest allocations
* Reconciling loan balances with financial statements and lender records
* Tracking fixed assets, depreciation, and other balance-sheet accounts
* Assisting with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
* Helping ownership understand expenses, overhead, and the financial performance of different areas of our organization
* Working closely with our outside CPA to provide accurate information for tax preparation and year-end reporting
* Helping us continually improve our accounting procedures and internal controls

We want our accounting system to provide more than numbers for a tax return. Good financial information helps us make responsible decisions about our staff, facilities, pricing, and the services we provide to families. Simply put, we want our P&L to be more than income and expenses, we want it to be a management tool.

**Qualifications**

* Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will absolutely be considered
* 3+ years of accounting or full-charge bookkeeping experience preferred
* Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial statements
* Experience with reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and month-end close
* Experience maintaining and reconciling loan and amortization schedules
* Experience with intercompany transactions or multiple related business entities is a plus
* Working knowledge of sales tax reporting and payment requirements
* Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort maintaining financial spreadsheets
* Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software
* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
* Ability to recognize discrepancies, investigate questions, and communicate concerns
* Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
* Ability to handle confidential financial, employee, and family information with care and discretion
* Comfortable working directly with ownership and explaining financial information in clear, understandable terms

**CPA certification is not required.** Experience working with a small, family-owned, or service-based business is a plus. Funeral service experience is not required.
