Seasonal Cemetery Worker

Full\-time, 40 hours/week. **Length of Seasonal Assignment:** April through October **Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only):** * Maintains City Cemetery grounds including mowing, weed eater, edging, fertilizing, and watering cemetery lands as directed. * Performs irrigation tasks, including irrigating large areas of developed cemetery lands, including connecting sprinkler heads, moving and setting up sprinkler lines and hoses, and laying and watering sod on new grave areas. * Rakes pinecones, pine needles, and leaves around trees and road rights\-of\-way and deposits in compost pile. * Loads and hauls compost pile to convenience site. * Trims hedges, bushes, and trees using a variety of hand tools and power tools. * Assists year\-round Cemetery staff with grave site preparation and maintenance including digging, backfilling, settling, compacting, sodding, and hand watering. * Utilizes City vehicles including pickup trucks with mounted water tanks. * Performs minor facility maintenance and repairs including painting and replacing lightbulbs. * Collects and removes litter from Cemetery grounds. * Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required. * Operates and maintains light\-duty equipment and vehicles appropriate to the functional area of assignment, including pickup trucks, ATV, mowers, and other related equipment. * Operates a variety of hand and power tools including rakes, shovels, backpack weed sprayer, and blower, pickax, weed whacker, chainsaw and other equipment related to work assignment as instructed. * Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the work day. * Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. * Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. * Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification. **Minimum Required Qualifications** ----------------------------------- * High School Diploma or GED; and * Some (at least 1 year) in maintenance, construction, or repair of buildings, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or related experience; or * Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. **Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities** --------------------------------------------- * Some knowledge of basic principles and safe practices of maintenance and repair activities. * Some knowledge of the safe and proper use of basic hand tools, power tools, and other related equipment. * Some knowledge of the maintenance and operation of related light\-duty equipment used in functional area of assignment. * Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn, related Federal, State, and local ordinances and regulations governing cemetery grounds and operations. * Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the techniques, methods, and materials used in the maintenance of cemeteries. * Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of times with exposure to varying weather conditions. * Ability to efficiently operate related light\-duty equipment, hand and power tools, and other equipment related to functional area of assignment. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public. * Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non\-technical language. * Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions. * Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks. * Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions. * Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time\-sensitive deadlines. * Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. * Demonstrates integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks. * Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork. **Required Special Qualifications** ----------------------------------- * This position requires operation of a company vehicle;
